Owning a business hasn’t always been easy, but the experience I have gained made it all worth it.
Business ownership was not necessarily the career path I thought I would take. I was a teacher for several years and thought my entire life would be teaching. Well, sometimes life has other plans.
My story involves originally starting out as a copywriter. I turned bookkeeper when I rebranded to Booth Business Support, LLC. I haven’t looked back and I am so glad this name encapsulates a multitude of the things I can do.
1. Don’t pigeon hole yourself into one thing.
When I was starting out everyone said “you need to have a niche.” Well I am not good at only doing one thing so a niche was already making me cringe. Copywriting felt too narrow and I was having troubles finding clients who needed that. The people I reached out to kept saying “well can you do this? Can you help me with that?” and I kept thinking well yes I can help them with that, but does that fall under my “niche?” Eventually I ditched the niche and decided I needed a brand and name that was broad enough for what I actually wanted to do.
2. It’s healthy for clients to come and go
I have a business structure that signs clients on for long periods of time. I really need to engage deeply with their business in order to help them. This type of structure requires creating professional and sometimes friendship type relationships. This can be great but it can also be hard when it’s time to step away. I always try to keep communication open and concise to avoid confusion. I also write everything down so I can refer back to it if there is confusion. Emails are a great place to refer back to a conversation if there is confusion or missed expectations. Sometimes the working relationship just isn’t working and it’s okay to set a termination date on the contract and go your separate ways.
I would love if you would join me over at Substack to finish reading this article and read other articles that I have enjoyed writing.
